Bookbinding Techniques – Robert Walp

In this two-day workshop students will be introduced to the basic tools and techniques of the bookbinder. Through a series of binding projects, moving from simple to complex, participants will create several books that will develop skills in tearing, folding, sewing and gluing both paper and hard cover bindings. The pamphlet stitch, a two-section hard cover binding and a Japanese style multi-section sewing will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on good craft technique and working in harmony with the properties of different materials.

Robert began his bookmaking career in 2000 at Vermont College in Montpelier. He has participated in numerous book arts workshops since then and in 2006 earned an M.F.A. in Book Arts from The University of Alabama, where he received the Raymond F. McClain Book Arts. His work can be found in many collections including The University of Vermont Bailey Library, Dartmouth College Rauner Library, Brown University Rockefeller Library in Providence, Rhode Island, The Library of Congress, The New York Public Library, and The Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. Robert works from his studio in the Adirondacks under the imprint of Chester Creek Press and teaches workshops at several art schools. He is a member of The Guild of Bookworkers and is curator of the Book Arts Collection at the Town of Chester Public Library.
